★ 1860s Purple Velvet Floral Bonnet

Woman's Bonnet (LACMA)

★ Isn’t this women’s bonnet just gorgeous?! I absolutely love the rich, deep purple colour, and the contrast between the matte finish of the velvet, and the shine of the silk satin ribbons is so beautiful. The handmade silk flowers adorning the brim are so pretty too, and add a wonderful touch of frivolity to this otherwise relatively simple bonnet – no beads, no feathers, no fringing, no embroidery; none of the usual frippery that typified the Victorian period.

Made in the United States, c.1862, this chic and sophisticated bonnet is currently in the collections of LACMA.

Much love,
