★ Neubourg-Cromière Portraits by Roslin

★ I absolutely love these gorgeous companion portraits of French aristocrats, the Baron and Baroness de Neubourg-Cromière. They were created in 1756 by noted Swedish artist Alexander Roslin, whose skillful representation of opulent fabrics and jewels in lustrous, shimmering colors saw him gain commissions from aristocratic families across Europe.

Unsurprisingly, the portrait of the Baroness is my favourite. She’s so pretty and her dress is unutterably gorgeous (though pink certainly isn’t my colour!). It’s a satin robe à la Française with matching under-sleeves, and it’s lavishly decorated with ruching, lace, and silk flowers. The colours positively glow from the canvas and the masquerade mask she’s holding is such a fun touch! Just beautiful. <3

Much love,
