★ ‘Mlle. Spindler’ by Nadar (c.1900)

★ French photographer Gaspard-Felix Tournachon – more commonly known as Nadar – was born on this day in 1820. Famous for his portraits of many of France’s most notable personages, his work features prominently in many prestigious photographic collections. This playfully coy example of Nadar’s portraiture shows French vaudeville performer, Mademoiselle Spindler, and dates from around 1900. I love the delicate hand colouring of this image, and the unusual addition of glass diamantine (a forerunner to glitter) gives it that extra something special.

Much love,
