★ Le Moulin Rouge by Stephane Passet (1914)

★ Fantastic autochrome of the Moulin Rouge cabaret, photographed by Stephane Passet, 24th June 1914. Founded in 1889 by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, it was the birthplace of the can-can dance and a subject of fascination for artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose paintings and illustrations imbued the nightclub with a glamour and mystique that persists in popular culture to this day. Located on the Boulevard de Clichy in Paris, the famous red windmill burned down less than a year after this photo was taken, on 27th February 1915, before eventually being rebuilt in 1921.

Much love,
