★ ‘Queen Guinevere’s Maying’ by John Collier (1900)

★ It’s the May Day holiday here in the UK, so to celebrate the glories of spring, I thought I’d share this beautiful painting – ‘Queen Guinevere’s Maying’ by John Collier (1900). Celebrating the renewal and fertility of springtime, May Day festivities traditionally saw people venture out in the early morning to collect blossoming flowers and branches, known as “going a-maying”. A maypole would often be decorated and planted on the village green, there was dancing and singing, and a beautiful young maiden would be crowned May Queen. After the harsh and dark months of winter, the dawning of warmer weather and longer days certainly seems like a good cause for celebration to me…

Much love,
