Detail from a beautiful illustrated advert for Adams California Fruit Chewing Gum, as published in Shadowland magazine, September 1919. Featuring a likeness of American silent film actress Ruth Roland, who was endorsing the product, the original caption reads "Ruth Roland says: Ripe, red cherries and Adams California Fruit Gum I think are equally delicious. I love them both." I can't testify as to whether she's right or not, but I will say that this fab picture must have certainly enticed many a magazine-reader to give it a try.
Lovely illustration showing a selection of day outfits designed by Gabrielle Chanel, published in 'Les Elegances Parisiennes' in March 1917. With their belted tunic jackets and full jersey skirts, these three outfits are the embodiment of late-1910s style. You can read more about this fashion plate in my latest blog post (the link is in my bio).
Easter Monday isn’t an official holiday in a lot of places, but it is here in the UK, so Happy Easter! I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend with your friends and family! Because I didn’t really want to wait a full 365 days until next Easter to post this, I thought I’d take this last opportunity to show you another beautiful antique greetings card I just came across. This one dates from c.1910, and has been beautifully hand-tinted with some delicate watercolours.
Happy Easter! I hope that wherever you are, you're having a beautiful, peaceful and joyous Easter weekend with your friends and loved ones. To celebrate the occasion, here's a lovely antique greetings card featuring the Easter bunny and an absolutely adorable little girl (c.1907). Isn't she a sweet little thing?
French photographer Gaspard-Felix Tournachon - more commonly known as Nadar - was born on this day in 1820. Famous for his portraits of many of France's most notable personages, his work features prominently in many prestigious photographic collections. This playfully coy example of Nadar's portraiture shows French vaudeville performer, Mademoiselle Spindler, and dates from around 1900. I love the delicate hand colouring of this image, and the unusual addition of glass diamantine (a forerunner to glitter) gives it that extra something special.
Happy 4th of July everyone! Whether you're American or not, I'm sure you can agree that this little girl dressed as Lady Liberty is utterly adorable! Photograph by Harris & Ewing, 1916.
